Dog needs help to walk again...

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, October 8, 2008- On September 28, 2008 a young stray dog who we now call "Auto" was hit by an automobile in front of the Alachua County Humane Society and had the luck or presence of mind to wander into the bushes next to one of the buildings of the Humane Society. He was discovered Monday morning by staff and was dehydrated and in shock. The Humane Society made Auto comfortable until he could be transported to Alachua County Animal Services for mandatory holding to see if an owner would come forward.

No owner came forward and the dog was evaluated by several vets during the holding period at the County Shelter. Auto is suffering from a severely damaged hind leg which will require extensive treatment or amputation and nerve damage in his other hind leg which makes his future tenuous. Auto is also suffering from damage to his pelvis. This is making it very hard for Auto to get around on his own. Staff from the Humane Society have refused to give up on Auto and are working with him daily.

The Humane Society Staff have worked with Auto's nerve damage and despite a very poor prognosis, given by multiple veterinarians, Auto is defying the odds and showing not only a will to live and a sweet disposition, but improved use of the nerve damaged leg! He showers the staff daily with affection and kisses and we at the Humane Society have fallen in love with Auto and want him to get better.

The treatment for Auto's condition is terribly expensive but the Humane Society would like to help. We are seeking cash donations for Auto to help cover the thousands of dollars his treatment will cost. The Alachua County Humane Society, a no-kill shelter, has committed to try to help Auto but needs help from the public. We receive no tax dollars to accomplish our mission and our resources are always spread thin.

We are seeking monetary donations from the public or in-kind donations from orthopedic vets to help Auto get better. Donations can be made by calling the Humane Society at 352.373.5855 or by using any major credit card on our website at http://www.alachuahumane.org

The Humane Society rescues over 1,000 companion animals each year in Alachua County and more than 50% of those animals require rehabilitative treatment. Rehabilitation is expensive and time consuming but is well worth the efforts. From broken bones, to terrible & debilitating infections, the staff & volunteers demonstraåte dedication making sure that every effort is exhausted in the treatment & rehabilitation of our furry friends.
